Hellmann implements Astrium’s SeCureSystem

Bremen, 2010, January 21. Hellmann Worldwide Logistics is the first company to implement the satellite-based container monitoring system SeCureSystem by equipping 20 maritime containers to begin with. Hellmann Worldwide Logistics therewith responds to the increasing container freight safety regulations of the international harbors of the United States. After five years of development Astrium and its cooperation partners present a ready-for-market system. Today Hellmann and Astrium signed the contract in the City Hall of Bremen in presence of Senator for Commerce, Ralf Nagel. The co-operation partners aim to establish, SeCureSystem as a safety standard for international container freight.

In order to meet the increasing need for new security solutions in the transportation of goods with the United States, Astrium developed the satellite-based container monitoring system “SeCureSystem”, together with EUROGATE und Hellmann Worldwide Logistics. The system has been extensively tested in transatlantic test transports and will be available at Astrium. The freight forwarder Hellmann is the first company to equip its sea freight containers with the satellite-based monitoring system.

„With the signing of the service contract for SeCureSystem, we succeeded in concluding a contract in the commercial field, which means an expansion of Astrium's service business. We are confident that our dialogues with potential customers will lead to further contracts. SeCureSystem not only meets the strict requirements of the US Department of Homeland Security but goes beyond that. It also offers an increase in security as well as an improvement in processes, and cost savings”, explained Dr. Wolfgang Busch, Project Manager of SeCureSystem, on the occasion of the contract signing in Bremen on Thursday.

SeCureSystem is a secure service for satellite-based monitoring of trailers, containers and other closed containers worldwide. The data-transfer system situated in the SeCureSystem-Box continuously transfers the position of the loading unit on the route of transport and in addition, supervises changes to the container such as damages, authorized and unauthorized opening, intrusion etc. All data is available to the users in time via a central control center. This way the users or the security agencies can promptly react in case of external disturbance.

Mobile Monitoring Device

The monitoring device, SeCureSystem-Box can be installed in the container by the customer, either portably or fixed, after a short instruction by the SeCureSystem service. Immediately after activation the relevant data is transmitted via an exceptionally safe and disturbance-resistant satellite-based network or alternatively via a terrestrial mobile wireless network to the control center.

The authorization and the authentication process, which have been specially developed for this application control any opening and closing of the container at any time of the transport. Moreover, the system integrates the individually necessary freight documentation. Sensitive sensors constantly measure the condition of the goods. This way, e.g. the permanent cooling of the goods can be verified.

There are more advantages for the user – e.g. industry, trade, forwarding or shipping companies – due to the authentication process during the monitoring and the continuous transmission of all relevant container data: the documentation of all cargo data becomes more transparent, easy and safe in terms of fraud. The automation of internal documentation and external handling processes leads to higher speed in the logistics process. The box transmits all security notifications to the customer in real-time, so he knows about the location and condition of his freight at any time.
