Hellmann Worldwide Logistics receives “Supplier of the year 2007” AwardBenteler Automotive is one of the leading global suppliers to the automotive industry. Every year, Benteler awards suppliers from ten different categories as best global suppliers. In the category “Logistics” Hellmann Worldwide Logistics received the “Supplier of the Year 2007” award for their outstanding transatlantic procurement logistics services including the specific development and implementation of packing solutions for optimal loading and utilization of container space. All awards were handed over to all winners in a big ceremony in the presence of Hubertus Benteler and about 100 guests from around the world at the Parkhotel, Bad Lippspringe/Germany. Both companies have been working together for more than five years in the field of transatlantic supply logistics connecting about 60 suppliers in Europe with production plants in Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. Besides pick-up scheduling and sea freight consolidations through dedicated automotive logistics teams in Germany and France, Hellmann provides a sophisticated reporting system that controls purchase order and allows transportation “just in time”. In the frame of CIP (Continuous Improvement Process) the development of seaworthy packaging material with a container suitable design stands out. Through constant cooperation and communication with all suppliers in Europe as well as with all plants in the Americas, permanent cost savings were generated for increasing transport volumes permanently. At the price-giving ceremony, Hubertus Benteler, Managing Owner Benteler Group, said: "Benteler Automotive will grow steadily over the next five years. In order to achieve our ambiguous goals we need ambiguous and innovative suppliers, too. You as winners have best chances to be part of that growth." In 2007, global Headquarters chose to start the process of obtaining ISO14001 certification for environmental compliance for the Miami and Headquarters facility. ISO14001 is a very complex certification that touches every aspect of our facility from the excessive use of paper to proper handling of hazardous materials that touch the docks. We are thrilled to relate that the Miami team passed this critical audit as well and will be awarded the ISO14001 certificate effective for one year. A second audit to be done next year will award Miami the continuous certification. It is expected that this certification will expand globally over the next several years in compliance with Hellmann’s global objective to “think green”. Check out our company website to learn more about Hellmann’s approach to Quality and Environmental aspects: Hellmann’s EDI system is a Big Hit with CustomersWith advances in technology making business communications faster, easier and more efficient, it is with no surprise that customers and partners of Hellmann Worldwide Logistics are embracing its Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) service. The service, which electronically transmits documents such as orders, status messages as well as registrations and forms is in fact so popular that Hellmann is receiving an average of 150,000 messages in a daily transmission.
The designed EDI technology enables messages to be processed at every stage in the supply chain from the moment an order is placed, to when the order arrives at its final destination. In short, the EDI service keeps everyone informed of the exact location of any consignment at any given moment in time. In 2006, Hellmann found that 36 million messages were exchanged between 2,500 partners and customers worldwide.
Martin Meyer, UK Managing Director of Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, explained: “Hellmann’s overall aim is to provide the best quality service to our customers. The EDI system is an excellent tool in supporting this. Through the EDI system we offer customers total transparency and as you can see from the figures, this is something they really appreciate. In addition, and from a business perspective, it offers consistency between Hellmann offices, saves valuable time and is more likely to eliminate any possible errors that can occur in supply chains.”
Due to the popularity of the EDI service and the growing number of system users, Hellmann is planning to restructure the EDI department. Jurgen Burger, Chief Executive Officer of Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, concluded: “The extended software will allow for an even better response time to customer’s needs and requests. Moreover, we can link up our existing services to the EDI system so that eventually customers can have complete access to our full range of IT capabilities.” Ace of Spades Dragline is One Step Closer to its Big US Move
John Ashbrook, Seafreight Manager for Hellmann Worldwide Logistics UK explained: “One of the sites at the Port of Blyth which is dedicated to the Ace of Spades dragline currently looks like a giant jigsaw puzzle. We have thousands of nuts and bolts in drums, smaller and more delicate pieces in several containers and now the larger pieces have arrived at the site ready for the ‘jigsaw’ pieces to be transported to the US.” Hellmann has been working with the international transportation firm, RTH Lubbers, to transfer the Ace of Spades pieces from its old site in Morpeth the ten mile distance to the Port of Blyth. The transportation of the Ace of Spade’s machinery began in January 2008 with the smaller and more delicate pieces transported first. Nevertheless, the most testing pieces to deliver were the final and larger components which RTH Lubbers transported separately from the containers. Stuart Ferguson, Commercial Director of RTH Lubbers, commented: “In its entirety, the Ace of Spade dragline weighs in at a massive 4,500 tons so it is easy to imagine the sheer size and weight of the larger pieces that we have transported. One such piece, which is part of the dragline’s generator, was 90 tons and 42ft long. To transfer this piece to the port required comprehensive logistics planning and coordination, ensuring the roads were suitable for the movement and that police and the Highways Agency were informed before the movement took place.”
Due to the careful planning and coordination, Hellmann, RTH Lubbers and NACC completed the movement ahead of schedule. Now, with all the components in place, the Ace of Spades will be shipped to the States on the same shipping service in a few weeks time.
A ForeignTrade Zone Customer Says Thank YouSince May 1, 2007, a portion of Hellmann’s facility in Indianapolis is designated as a Foreign Trade Zone. The FTZ status provides our customers with the possibility to meet all of the requirements of tracking & handling mandated by U.S. Customs. It enables them to (a) lower inventory costs, (b) defer/reduce and/or eliminate U.S. Customs duties, (c) distribution savings and (d) elect preferential duty rates. Our Boston office has received a Thank you Letter from one of Hellmann’s first Hellmann Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) accounts: Holophane supplies glass lenses to some of the major auto makers and customers such as, Valeo Sylvania, North American Lighting, Automotive Lighting, J.W. Speaker, and Visteon.

Commonly referred to in the trade as the 10+2 initiative. This requirement by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in some ways will change the way you import cargo into the United States. Please find below a list of all 10 requirements that need to be submitted prior to the container being placed on board of the vessel: 1. 2. Seller, Name and Address 3. Buyer, Name and Address 4. Shipped to Party, Name and Address 5. Container Stuffing Location 6. Name and Address of Party who stuffed the Container, or arranged for the Stuffing 7. Importer of Record or Social Security Number or other Identifying number 8. Consignee Number(s) 9. Country of Origin 10. However, this does NOT terminate the Automated Manifest System (AMS) requirements as well. Instead, this is an additional data that must be sent. The Importer or their agent (typically the Licensed Customs Broker) are the only groups allowed to send this filing. With 35 years of experience in the logistics industry and almost 15 years in Government/Military Sales, Chuck Bolduc will take on the position of VP Government & Military Sales. With that, Hellmann USA builds the foundation for its new vertical. Chuck has filled various management positions on a national as well as global level. It is his goal to make Hellmann a strong logistics supporter of the Department of Defense and build a base of accounts that will cover the many aspects of government/military logistics. Chuck will report directly to Arnie Goldstein, Sr. VP Sales/Marketing.

HWL takes leading role in container security project
Great CLC success for Hellmann USA!“ “Laurinburg/Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce and County representatives recently met with executives from WestPoint Home and Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, Inc. to celebrate the announcement that WestPoint Home has contracted with Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, Inc. to assume the distribution of its product worldwide. The facility in Wagram will become Hellmann’s largest distribution facility in the United States.
The decision is expected to create as many as 70 new jobs at the facility. “We are pleased to have Hellmann Worldwide Logistics as a new business partner in Scotland county,” said Chamber Board Chairman, Harry Yeatman. “Their long-standing track record of quality service, coupled with the company’s commitment to becoming an integral part of this community, make them a welcome addition to our industrial base. The Chamber of Commerce is here to assist Hellmann in any capacity necessary to make their transition in Wagram a success. Hellmann officials met with WestPoint employees and to begin the process of transforming the site from a manufacturing to a distribution facility.” Wagram is an existing Westpoint facility which once was the largest towel manufacturing plant in the world employing over 2000 people, producing towels for the American Market. During its peak the plant ran 3 shifts for 24 hours, 7 days per week. Westpoint had a Distribution Center attached to each manufacturing plant and as manufacturing moved overseas only the DC was left with miscellaneous work such as quality control. Looking at the size of the facility (in total over 1.1 million square foot) it was determined that it could serve as a Distribution Center for Westpoint products produced overseas. Hellmann CLC Inc. (a division of Hellmann Worldwide Logistics Inc.) will operate the DC for Westpoint. This represents the largest CLC set up for Hellmann in the USA today and will be a significant step towards the growth of Hellmann’s CLC product. Hellmann will operate the majority of this facility. The first milestone which is planned around June 25th, 2008: Hellmann USA will take over the operation in Wagram which will require installing its Warehouse Management System (LFS) and retrofitting the facility.

Hapag-Lloyd is “Carrier of the Year 2007” for the globally active logistics provider Hellmann Worldwide Logistics. Jost Hellmann (l.), Executive Board Chairman of Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, presented the award in Hamburg to Uwe Lindemann, Head of Fracht Nord (r.). Among the criteria evaluated were service and customer orientation, global network, modernity and size of the fleet, IT links, pricing policy, financial stability and the length of the partnership. HWL Team Power: Sunrise to Sunset Relay: 170 Miles across FloridaFlorida’s Ultimate Running Adventure! A Hellmann Team of 12 runners from HWL Miami and Headquarters succeeded in an almost impossible run: 170 miles, from Indian Riverside Park in Jensen Beach (A) to the Historic Thomas Edison and Henry Ford Estates in Downtown Ft Myers (B).
Cramped together with 12 other runners in a minivan for a day, no sleep, no showers and 170 miles to run under the burning sun of Southern Florida, the Hellmann team set an example for true team spirit: With about 15 miles per person (divided in 3 legs), the team reached the final destination after 25 hours and 42 seconds. But that is not all: Out of over 40 teams, Hellmann USA came home as the winner of the Corporate Team Division. After the run, and some moments to relax, the “Sunrise to Sunset Relay” Get-together gave room to eat, relax, and most importantly exchange stories with other runners.
The Hellmann team is already planning its next run – so wait and see what next challenge is coming up!!!
The Sunrise to Sunset Relay…what started as a "point to the map" turned into the inaugural Sunrise to Sunset Relay 2007, followed by this year’s second run. It is a charity event as $50 of each team registration goes to support the American Cancer Society!

One of the easiest and best ways to become involved with a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) trade compliance program is with the new Automated Commercial Environment (ACE). ACE has, and will, bring together several Customs systems and it will replace the Automated Commercial System previously used by CBP. One of the benefits as an importer is that you are given the opportunity to hold an ACE account and find information available specific to your company via a secure web portal. There are various interactive reports that are available, as well as other opportunities (such as periodic payment) that are available solely to ACE participants. The current cost of information and data is often at a premium, but the ACE program is free to all importers, and we highly recommend regardless the size of your company that you look into sign up for an ACE account. The last project focused on the first Golden West / World Bank closings since the Wachovia buy out. It included 56 closings in one day and took weeks to prepare. The team in charge at Hellmann Charlotte did an outstanding job by completing all 56 closings in one day with approximately 224 skids coming inbound to Charlotte. Once in Charlotte, each skid has to be broken down to separate special equipment from the materials that will move on to a recycling company appointed by Wachovia. A Wachovia command center on site had their eyes on Hellmann at all times. “I received a call from one of the Wachovia project leaders who was at the bank command center the day of the closings”, said Melony Stilwell, Key Account Manager for Wachovia. “She was very excited to tell me that this project was a home run and she gave congratulations with a smile I could hear on the phone.” Hellmann USA opens Two New US Branches: Minneapolis and San DiegoHellmann USA continues to expand its activities with the opening of two new stations: Hellmann Minneapolis and Hellmann San Diego! Both branches offer the full array of services such as Air/Sea Freight, Brokerage, CLC/Warehousing and Domestic Transportation. Minneapolis will be focusing on the market in North and South Dakota as well as Minnesota and Iowa. On January 18, 2008 Klaus Hellmann honored all employees who were with the company for over 20 years and are celebrating their anniversary in 2007. In total, 54 people received the honor: Four employees are 40 years with the company, ten are 35 years and eight are 30 years. Ten of them have been with HWL for 25 years and 22 of them are celebrating their 20th Anniversary. All together, we have 1,440 years of Hellmann experience! Klaus Hellmann thanked all of them for their support and loyalty. “Our employees build the foundation for the success of our company”, he said in his honorific speech. Hellmann Chicago participated in the “Polar Plunge” into Lake Michigan – a charity event organized by Special Olympics Illinois to support athletes in the State of Illinois. The Hellmann team was able raise over $2,600 for the event thanks to the help from the Hellmann Network! The focus in Special Olympics is on what athletes can do. Like everyone, Special Olympics athletes like to win, but more importantly, they strive to do their best.

Klaus Bothmer is a new edition, working out of Houston. He has also been involved with leading companies and has established great relations with Donaldson, and Selas/Linde. Both of them have a great expertise in the project cargo field, and are working closely together to cover as much territory as possible in the USA. Torben Fenske, located in Miami, completes the team, with his forte being projects operations. He actively supports both Ed and Klaus. The US management is committed to grow this team step by step, and the future looks very promising. The industry offers tremendous business opportunities for project cargo activities. What is needed is a strong interaction with our key project people around the globe, and where necessary go outside of the box to ensure that we do get the right project support in the countries needed to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations. “Groundbreaking” Event in EWROur Newark office has experienced a “Groundbreaking” event in July: 117 Sunfield Avenue, Raritan Center in Edison, New Jersey will soon be the new location of our EWR state-of-the-art distribution facility. Scheduled move-in date is October 1, 2008!!! With 80,000 sq. ft. of warehousing and 11,000 sq. ft. of office space, this new location will hold many warehousing opportunities for HWL customers. Trade Compliance Corner – First Sale is not dead… yetJust as the old skit in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” goes, the First Sale ruling by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is not dead… yet. First Sale customs valuation allows importers to declare the price paid in the earlier sale (i.e., first sale) for customs purposes, resulting in a lower dutiable value and thus, lower customs duty liability. Earlier this year Customs and Border Protection (CBP) proposed a new interpretation that would effectively eliminate First Sale valuation in the United States. Judicial precedent upheld this and several in the trade community and congress were not pleased that this resulted to a proposed rule making. Congress acted quickly and included a provision in the “Farm Bill” that would restrict CBP from actually enforcing this regulation until January 1st, 2010 – given that they fulfill some additional items: 1.) Collect Data for one year related to First Sale, 2.) Discuss with Congress and the Commercial Operations Advisory Committee (COAC) before posting a proposed rule making and the final rulemaking, and 3.) Gain the approval of the Secretary of the Treasury. Of particular notice should be the fact that data must now be collected from the importer as to whether or not this transaction value is based on first sale. We recommend that importers begin to contact their supply base immediately, as well as change your purchase orders to include terminology on your commercial invoice documents that state whether or not this shipment is based upon “First Sale.” Customer Event in NewarkOur Hellmann branches in Newark, NJ and New York, NY, have taken a major step forward to prepare for the 10+2 Regulations – proposed by Customs and Border Protection. The rule will require importers to provide 10 additional data elements on U.S. bound cargo 24 hours prior to the container being loaded on a ship. Together with Headquarter Management, the offices reviewed the proposed U.S. Customs 10 + 2 ruling and deemed a seminar on the topic would be embraced by their current client base as well as target accounts. The proposed seminar received a great response with 24 clients attending. The seminar was kicked off by Arnie Goldstein, Sr. VP of Sales/Marketing, and included presentations on the 10+2 Proposed Regulations given by Mark Sola, VP of Brokerage, Customs & Compliance, as well as a presentation on Insurance presented by Eva Rostran, Claim&Vendor Manager at Hellmann USA. The topic of Incoterms 2000 was covered by Newark’s Key Account Manager Angelo Calcavecchio. Neil Dale, BDM at EWR, informed us that an “overwhelming response and thanks followed from all attendees”.
